Hospital foundation double winner
The Portage and District Hospital foundation was a double winner during Friday’s chili cook off when it not only received $3,887 from the fundraiser, but bragging rights as having the best chili in town.
“We feel very, very grateful and the people that helped us make the chili should be very proud because we had a great product,” said an excited Erin Miller, executive director of the foundation. “We can’t tell you what the secret ingredients are as we’re going to be in it next year!”
Meyer Norris Penny (MNP), who has been holding the event for 12 years, chooses a different charity annually and the hospital foundation was the lucky recipient for 2014.
“We had 275 people attend and we’re very happy with that because of the weather. It was so hot out and for people to come in (is great). Usually, we hold it on a cool day where maybe you’d want to eat chili, so we’re happy with that,” said MNP manager Diane Robertson.
Last year, the cook-off had 260 people attending.
The cook-off pitted 10 mouthwatering chili recipes against one another for the title of Chili Supreme. Coming in second place this year was Stevenson and Desrochers Law Corps. followed by Watson’s Roofing and Siding in third place.
“We do this for the charity so that it can get the funds and for the exposure. They’re always pretty happy with that, especially for the type of charity, last year with the Community Foundation (of Portage and District) and this year the hospital foundation, publicity is just huge for them, ” said Robertson.
Last year, MNP chose to sponsor the Community Foundation, but it has also sponsored Tupper Street Resource Centre, Youth for Christ, Central Plains Cancer Care, the Portage Family Abuse Prevention Centre and the Canadian Mental Health Association in the past.
The winner of last year’s competition was Stevenson and Desrochers Law Corps. beating the hospital foundation, the Community Foundation, Days Inn, Canadian Mental Health Association, Solomon’s Home Garden Gift, RONA Building Centre, Portage ARC Industries, Watson’s Roofing and Siding, and Century 21 Foxx Realty.Back to Stories
